About Red Stag Timber

Red Stag Timber is an independent, privately owned timber company, based in Rotorua, New Zealand.Established in 2003 to own and operate the Waipa Mill, which was originally established by the government in 1939 and subsequently privatised in 1996. Red Stag Timber consists of a sawmill, with associated timber processing operations, which is currently producing 300,000 m3 of lumber per annum, with an annual turnover around $100 million. The company employs approximately 210 staff.

Red Stag Timber has a long-term commitment to further developing its product range and market base. Its particular focus is on structural lumber products, but it also produces outdoor, industrial, appearance and furniture grade lumber. To achieve this, Red Stag Timber is committed to the continual upgrade of its production facilities. Recent investments include:

  • The new stand-alone planer mill processing plant – increasing site production by approximately 50%
  • The implementation of sonic testing of logs and lumber
  • Machine stress grading of structural timber
  • Two new high speed drying kilns
  • New Boron/LOSP Treatment Plant

These factors, combined with a long term secure log contract, an enthusiastic stable workforce and a commitment to highest quality products and relationships, give Red Stag Timber the edge for long term success in its chosen markets.

Red Stag Timber’s current approximate market break-down is:

The second new high temperature kiln (drying 100,000 m3/yr) was completed in October 2008. This gives the company surplus drying capacity and will enable inefficient old kilns to be retired. New markets for kiln dried product are being developed by the marketing team.

The new Boron/LOSP treatment facility commissioned in August 2009 enables Red Stag Timber to treat all its product lines on-site. This means better control on the quality of treatment and lower cost of production.

The latest scanning and optimisation technology is also being installed on the the large log line Primary Breakdown in the sawmill in October 2009.
